Participate in cross-disciplinary research
Conduct independent research on a project at the confluence of engineering, physics, biology, and chemistry, gaining new skills, knowledge, and perspectives along the way.
Join a CEMB research lab
Gain exposure to the innovative mechanobiology research that is made possible through this unique NSF center. Work with expert labs in the field as they pursue cutting-edge discoveries.
I liked that my project was educational for me but also was important research for my lab.
The thing I liked best was working with the postdocs and graduate students in the lab. I also liked having control and independence in my work.
Mentorship and
professional skill-building
Participants will work closely with a graduate student or postdoc bench mentor, under the guidance of one of our faculty mentors. Those chosen for the program will also participate in lectures, outreach, learning lunches and other programming aimed at illuminating pathways, skills, and tools for a career in scientific research.
Become part of the CEMB Network
Participants will become part of the CEMB’s nation-wide network of scientists and engineers leading the way in engineering mechanobiology.
Cohort Development
Program participants will live together in Washington University housing at no personal expense. Each student will receive a single room in an apartment adjacent to the campus and public transportation. Apartments will be located near each other to allow for maximum interaction and cooperation. The cohort will also come together for professional development and enjoy group outings.
Explore Career Opportunities in STEM
Through guided tours, REU participants will have the opportunity to visit industrial, academic, and non-profit partners to learn about real-world applications of STEM-related skills. Students will participate in workshops that develop professional and job-seeking skills. REU students will also be encouraged to participate in CEMB outreach activities that enhance teaching and lab instruction skills.

Student apartments are located close to the University and to the popular Delmar Loop area, which boasts a lively shopping and restaurant district. Forest Park, home to several of St. Louis’ best free attractions, is located just steps from campus.

CEMB participants will have access to Washington University in St. Louis summer housing. WashU ranks #1 on Princeton Review’s Best College Dorms list for the quality of our residence halls. In addition, WashU maintains many types of modern residential spaces, including apartments adjacent to campus.
